HIRE ME WITH CONFIDENCE

I am a self-taught playwright who wrote my first play in 2008, and had my first production--a full-length called THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR--in 2010. Since then, I have written more than 30 full-length plays and about three dozen ten-minute plays that have have been produced all over the US and world--all while operating from Buffalo, New York.

I also have:

  • Two feature films produced and two shorts, plus audio plays
  • Feature films currently in development
  • Been an O'Neil semi-finalist and finalist
  • Been a Princess Grace Fellowship finalist and semi-finalist
  • Been on the Kilroys List
  • Won multiple national prizes, residencies, and development opportunities
  • Been commissioned by multiple entities
  • Three of the top ten recommended full-length plays on NPX
  • Never gone a year without at least one full-length production, and rarely a month without a ten-minute production
  • Multiple published plays
  • Multiple publications and in ten-minute-play and monologue anthologies
  • An agent
  • Been elected to Dramatists Guild Council
  • Been appointed a National New Play Network Ambassador at Large
  • Become part of the Dramatists Guild Plays in Progress faculty

I work steadily and, since I started, have increasingly earned more from playwriting and related activities each successive year. I can help you make your play better, and offer solid advice on marketing it and promoting it. I cannot promise you a production or an introduction, but I can help you help yourself to make those things happen if you're willing to do the work.

Donna has transformed my creative process. Each time I sent a new draft, it became clear she wasn't simply skimming pages, but digging deeply into every scene, every line, every word— challenging me, questioning my choices, and pushing the work to a higher level. That level of engagement is rare.

I not only feel grateful for her insight and rigor, but I also want other writers to know what it’s like to work with someone who cares that much about the craft. And if I’m being completely honest, a small part of me hesitates to say this publicly, because once people realize how good she is, I may have to share her with everyone else. But she deserves that recognition.

Donna is simply brilliant as a mentor/script assessor/playwrighting coach. I've sought her advice and coaching many times for different plays and works. She's thoughtful and clever and her advice and suggestions are always spot on, from characters, to story and themes as well as roadblocks and seemingly unsolvable obstacles.

Her suggestions are always to improve the work, and, as a writer herself, she is very empathetic about the process. She identifies structural problems and, always brilliantly, comes up with creative solutions. Donna pushes you to really interrogate your work and to write your best. She's the ideal person to have in your corner through the travails of crafting and reworking a play. I can't recommend her enough.

When I was confused by the chaotic first draft of a new play, I turned to Donna Hoke for assistance. She provided extraordinarily detailed feedback, and I have now completed my third draft with her help. She's a great guide, and I will certainly call on her again.

Your feedback was extremely detailed and to the point with concrete solutions. Absolutely worth the price.
